Michael Somsan's Road to Ironman World Championships 2016

THANK YOU for visiting my Blind Athlete Development Account page!

My name is Michael Somsan and I am a totally blind triathlete. In 1995, I suffered a gunshot wound to the head while in the line of duty which left me totally blind. I have the great honor of being selected as one of five physically challenged athletes to compete in this year's Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii on October 8th.

First and foremost, I am a single dad, and live my life as a role model and inspiration for my two daughters. Our family motto is, "never give up and never be defeated!" and we live by those words every day.

I am also a retired First Lieutenant from the United States Army. My legacy is about helping others and giving back. As a lawyer, I volunteer my time in the community through the Modest Means Legal Services program and serve our veterans with the Military Legal Assistance Project. In 2015, I was presented the "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias Courage award from the United States Sports Academy for my continuing efforts to take on impossible challenges and make them possible.

In taking on those seemingly impossible challenges, I have watched my dreams come true, and have felt honored as I have inspired others to strive to make their “impossible” a reality as well. It is in our uncommon endeavors where the extraordinary can be discovered.

Ironman Kona is more than just the iconic triathlon race known around the world to me. This Ironman race is truly a special event for me. As a local Hawaiian boy, I grew up always dreaming of one day lining up on the start line in the waters of Kailua Bay, cycling on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway, and of course, making the final turn of the run on to Ali'i Drive, heading for the finish line. However, I went into the military to serve my country, became disabled in the line of duty, and had those dreams take a 25 year detour. A delay is not a denial, and Ironman has taught me a broken body does not mean a broken spirit . On October 8th, I am finally coming home to fulfill that dream.

I am asking you to join me on my journey to the finish line. Ironman's motto is “Anything is possible” but for me, as a blind triathlete, it truly is impossible to do this alone. My dedicated guide, Dominic Bernardo, and I are doing everything we can to bring this dream to fruition, but the equipment and travel required for both of us to train and race at the Ironman World Championships is extremely expensive.

Please help us by making a tax-deductible sponsorship donation towards our road to Kona on October 8, 2016.

THANK YOU for your support! Never give up and never be defeated!
